How To Effectively Network

It’s not what you know, but who you know. Here are some common-sense tips to help you successfully network and build lasting relationships to help advance your career.

Be thoughtful and complimentary of others

Promote others, not yourself. Show enthusiasm about your peers and the great work they do. This will allow your contacts to see you as a thoughtful and considerate person, and view you in a more favorable manner.

Be genuine, show interest

Don’t just talk about yourself. Ask others about themselves and listen intently to their responses.

Find out what they are doing, what makes them excited, what they are passionate about, and what their aspirations are. Have meaningful conversations where you can truly get to know others. They will more than likely ask you to talk about yourself.

Find a mentor who does what you want to do

Connect with as many people who do what you do or would like to do. Make sure they know who you are and what you do, and also get to know as many of their contacts. Don’t just ask for help. Ask how you can help, and volunteer your time with them. This will enable you to learn what they do firsthand.

Show gratitude

Be gracious and thankful for help you receive.  Always return phone calls and respond to emails timely.    Be pleasant and polite in all interactions, even if you are having a bad day.  Never show your frustration with your job search, even when it is not going well.  No one wants to be in contact with a grumpy, negative, and rude person. Your email and voice tone speak volumes.  It only takes one negative experience for people to write you off for good.
